Additional Features

UWB Proximity Unlocking

The U400 uses UWB to measure how far you are from the door and which direction you are coming from, so it only unlocks during a clear, intentional approach. You can adjust approach direction and even enable special “dual‑door” mode in the Aqara app, which is especially helpful for homes with metal gates or double doors.

Hands‑free unlock currently works with Apple Home Key on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models when Express Mode is enabled. If your phone or watch battery is low, you can still tap to unlock with Home Key, use your fingerprint, enter a PIN or use the backup key.

Deadbolt Security Design

The U400 is built as a single‑cylinder smart deadbolt that replaces the upper deadbolt portion of a standard North American door, keeping the existing lower latch if present. It supports common door thicknesses and backsets, and has achieved BHMA Level 3 certification plus an IP65 rating on the exterior unit for dust and water resistance.

A built‑in gyroscope allows precise door‑state detection, enabling reliable auto‑lock after closing without relying on additional magnetic sensors. Features like failed‑attempt lockout and night‑latch mode further enhance security by limiting tampering and restricting how the lock can be opened from outside.

Smart‑Home Ecosystem Compatibility

Because the U400 speaks Matter over Thread, it can be added to multiple ecosystems without a proprietary lock‑in. With a compatible Thread‑enabled Matter controller, you can control and automate the lock from Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant and others.

Aqara’s own hubs, such as the M3 and camera hubs, can act as Thread border routers and Matter controllers, creating a robust base for whole‑home automation. Over‑the‑air firmware updates help the lock stay current with new Matter and Aliro capabilities over time.

Access Control Methods

The U400 supports a wide range of unlocking methods so every family member or visitor can use what feels most natural.

  • UWB hands‑free unlock with supported Apple Home Key devices
  • Tap‑to‑unlock with Apple Home Key on iPhone or Apple Watch
  • Fingerprint unlocking with storage for up to 50 fingerprints and fast recognition times
  • 6–10‑digit PIN codes, including one‑time and scheduled passwords for guests and service providers
  • NFC cards or tags, mobile app control and supported voice assistants, plus a traditional mechanical key override

Through the Aqara app and Matter platforms, you can share digital access, view activity logs and remotely lock/unlock when paired with a compatible hub.

Privacy & Security Considerations

UWB communication uses scrambled timestamps and distance checks, helping to resist common relay and replay attacks that target wireless car keys and entry systems. The lock verifies not only identity but also whether the key holder is physically in front of the door, reducing the risk of remote spoofing.

Fingerprint data and user credentials are stored locally on the device with encryption instead of being uploaded to the cloud. Fine‑grained controls like Do Not Disturb mode, failed‑attempt lockout and detailed event logs give homeowners more visibility and control over how and when the lock is used.

Description

Many homeowners want a front‑door lock that feels as effortless as unlocking a phone, without sacrificing real deadbolt security. The Aqara U400 solves this by turning your iPhone or Apple Watch into a precise digital key that unlocks only when you genuinely arrive at your door.

Powered by ultra wideband (UWB) [currently supported only on IOS], the U400 can detect your direction, distance and movement, so it unlocks when you walk up to the door—no PINs, no fumbling, no tapping. Unlike simple Bluetooth proximity, UWB helps reduce accidental unlocks and offers stronger protection against relay attacks, giving families a more secure and intuitive way to come home.

Beyond hands‑free entry, the U400 is a full‑featured digital deadbolt with fingerprint access, keypad passcodes, NFC, app control and a mechanical key backup. Built on Matter over Thread, it works with major platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and more, so it can evolve with your smart home instead of locking you into a single ecosystem.

Everyday use is designed to be simple: auto‑lock when you close the door, notifications and logs in the app, low‑battery alerts and IP65‑rated outdoor durability. With BHMA‑certified deadbolt hardware and Aqara’s ecosystem of cameras, sensors and hubs, the U400 becomes a reliable front‑door solution for apartments, condos and landed homes alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have Questions? We're Here to Help You.

Yes. The Aqara U400 is a smart deadbolt designed to replace a standard single-cylinder deadbolt on many residential doors, while keeping the lower latch if present.

UWB (Ultra-Wideband) is a short-range wireless technology that measures distance and direction with much higher accuracy than Bluetooth. This allows the U400 to better detect your true approach to the door and helps reduce accidental or relay-based unlocks.

Yes. The U400 is Matter-certified and built on Thread, allowing it to work with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant and other supported platforms via compatible controllers.

The U400 fits many wooden doors that use a standard North American-style deadbolt, which can include apartments, condos and landed homes. Always verify door thickness, backset and bore size against the installation guide before purchase.

UWB uses precise timing and direction sensing with scrambled timestamps, making it more resistant to relay and replay attacks than typical Bluetooth proximity systems. The lock also uses BHMA-certified deadbolt hardware and supports features like failed-attempt lockout.

Yes. With support for Matter over Thread and being described as Aliro-ready, the U400 is designed for long-term interoperability across smart-home ecosystems and future platform updates.

The U400 provides low-battery alerts via the app and voice notifications. It can be recharged using its USB-C port, powered temporarily via USB-C if fully depleted, or unlocked using the included mechanical key.
