UWB Proximity Unlocking

The U400 uses UWB to measure how far you are from the door and which direction you are coming from, so it only unlocks during a clear, intentional approach. You can adjust approach direction and even enable special “dual‑door” mode in the Aqara app, which is especially helpful for homes with metal gates or double doors.​​

Hands‑free unlock currently works with Apple Home Key on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models when Express Mode is enabled. If your phone or watch battery is low, you can still tap to unlock with Home Key, use your fingerprint, enter a PIN or use the backup key.​​

Deadbolt Security Design

The U400 is built as a single‑cylinder smart deadbolt that replaces the upper deadbolt portion of a standard North American door, keeping the existing lower latch if present. It supports common door thicknesses and backsets, and has achieved BHMA Level 3 certification plus an IP65 rating on the exterior unit for dust and water resistance.​​

A built‑in gyroscope allows precise door‑state detection, enabling reliable auto‑lock after closing without relying on additional magnetic sensors. Features like failed‑attempt lockout and night‑latch mode further enhance security by limiting tampering and restricting how the lock can be opened from outside.​​

Smart‑Home Ecosystem Compatibility

Because the U400 speaks Matter over Thread, it can be added to multiple ecosystems without a proprietary lock‑in. With a compatible Thread‑enabled Matter controller, you can control and automate the lock from Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant and others.​​

Aqara’s own hubs, such as the M3 and camera hubs, can act as Thread border routers and Matter controllers, creating a robust base for whole‑home automation. Over‑the‑air firmware updates help the lock stay current with new Matter and Aliro capabilities over time.​​

Privacy & Security Considerations

UWB communication uses scrambled timestamps and distance checks, helping to resist common relay and replay attacks that target wireless car keys and entry systems. The lock verifies not only identity but also whether the key holder is physically in front of the door, reducing the risk of remote spoofing.​​

Fingerprint data and user credentials are stored locally on the device with encryption instead of being uploaded to the cloud.
